Crossword Personalization

The Crossword option lets customers type in words that get automatically arranged into an interlocking, Scrabble-tile style puzzle grid on the canvas. It's the option to reach for when a design should feel like a keepsake word puzzle, a family's names crossing each other, a couple's names, a list of favorite things, rather than a plain line of text.

To add it, go to Option sets in the sidebar, open the option set for your product, click Add option, choose Crossword under Others, then click Add.

Content

  • Label: the field name shown above the input, defaults to "Crossword"
  • Help text: optional guidance shown below the label
  • Max length: caps how many characters the customer can enter in total
  • Required: forces the customer to enter at least one word before they can complete the order
  • Is tag input: ticked on by default, displays the field as a tag input where each word the customer types becomes its own removable tag, rather than one free-text box
  • Default value: the starting words shown before a customer edits them, entered as space-separated words (e.g. "Your text" becomes two crossing words: TEXT and YOUR)
  • Recreate: regenerates the puzzle layout for the current words without changing them, useful if the auto-arranged grid doesn't look right
  • Allow customers to regenerate puzzle: adds a Regenerate button to the storefront so customers can reshuffle the layout themselves

Typing words into the tag input on the storefront preview shows exactly how this works: each word becomes a tag, and the canvas immediately redraws the puzzle so the words interlock wherever their letters match.

Ticking Allow customers to regenerate puzzle reveals an Inline content field (the regenerate button's own label, defaults to "Regenerate") and its own Help text, and adds a real Regenerate button beneath the input in the storefront preview.

Fonts & characters

Controls the look of the letters on each tile.

  • Default font: search and pick a font for the tile letters
  • Personalize font: lets the customer change the font themselves
  • Font size: as a percentage of the tile
  • Text color: the letter color, defaults to near-black
  • Show score: adds a small Scrabble-style point value to the corner of each tile (e.g. Q and Z score higher than common letters)

Tile

Controls the size, spacing, and background of each letter tile.

  • Max item size: the largest a tile can render at
  • Tile ratio (W/H): width-to-height proportion of each tile
  • Tile gap: spacing between tiles
  • Radius: corner rounding on each tile
  • Tile background: choose Color for a flat fill color, or Pattern to upload an image as a repeating fill with its own Pattern scale
  • Personalize background: lets the customer change the tile background themselves

Transform

The standard Width, Height, X, Y, Skew X, Skew Y, alignment, flip, Opacity, and Rotation controls for positioning the puzzle on the canvas, the same Transform panel shared by other canvas-based option types.

Condition

Like most option types, Crossword supports its own conditions, so you can show or hide it based on a selection elsewhere in the option set. See the Conditional Option Sets guide if you want to set that up.

📌 Don't forget to click Save once you're happy with the setup, and make sure the option set's status is Active (not Draft). Customers won't see the Crossword option on your storefront until both are done.
