Text personalization

This guide walks you through setting up text personalization in your Customix template. Use this feature to let your customers personalize a text field, such as by adding a name, message, or quote.

1. Add a Text Layer

In the Template editor, click the Text tab in the left sidebar. Here you'll find five types of text elements you can add to your design:

  • Standard text — added via the Add text button; a regular, editable text layer
  • Curved Text — wraps text around a circular path
  • Warp Text (Beta) — deforms text using a Bezier warp shape
  • Crossword — creates an interactive crossword puzzle
  • Word Search — creates an interactive word search puzzle

This guide focuses on the standard text layer. The other specialized text types are covered in their own separate documents.

To add a standard text layer:

  • Type your default text in the Content field (e.g., "Your text").
  • Click Add text to place it on the canvas.

Once you've added a text layer, two sets of controls become available:

  • The top toolbar lets you style the text, adjust the font, font size, text color, fill, stroke, letter spacing, alignment, shadow, and other visual properties. Use these to define how the text looks in your design.

  • The right-hand panel contains the Personalization settings. If this is simply a default text layer that customers don't need to edit, you can leave these settings as they are. If you want customers to be able to enter their own text or modify this layer, see other sections below for how to enable personalization.

The Personalization panel offers several ways to let customers customize a text layer. Each option below can be enabled independently, and is explained in detail in its own section.

2. Enable Personalize Text

When you enable Personalize text, the app adds a text input field on the product page where customers can enter their own content. The settings below let you control how this input field behaves:

  • Label — the field name shown to customers (e.g., "Your text")
  • Help text — an optional hint displayed below the field to guide customers
  • Placeholder — example text shown inside the field before the customer types anything
  • Max length — the maximum number of characters a customer can enter
  • Required — makes the field mandatory; customers must fill it in before adding the product to cart
  • Is paragraph — switches the field to a larger text area, suitable for longer text inputs
  • Is numeric — restricts the input to numbers only
  • Trim whitespace — automatically removes extra spaces at the start and end of the customer's input
  • Text transform — applies a fixed text style to the input, such as uppercase or lowercase

Display swatches by characters and Display layout swatches by text length are advanced settings used specifically for the character-based swatch display mode. For details on how these work and when to use them, see the dedicated guide: Display multiple swatches based on the number of characters

3. Personalize font

When you enable Personalize font, customers can choose from a set of fonts you've prepared, instead of being limited to a single fixed font. To set it up:

  • Tick the Personalize font checkbox.
  • In the Fonts dialog that appears, select a font folder you previously created in the Assets section, then click Done.

Once a folder is selected, the panel updates as shown in Image 2, where you can configure the following:

  • Label — the field name shown to customers (it defaults to the folder name, e.g., "Custom font")
  • Required — makes the font selection mandatory before adding the product to cart
  • Values — displays the fonts pulled from the selected folder; each appears as a selectable swatch for customers
  • Folder — shows which font folder is linked; click to change it
  • Edit display type — adjusts how the font options are displayed to customers
  • Add value — lets you add individual fonts to the selection

4. Personalize color

Customix offers two ways to let customers change the text color. You can enable either one, depending on how much freedom you want to give customers.

Option A: Personalize with color palette

This option lets customers choose from a predefined set of colors. To set it up:

  • Tick the Personalize with color palette checkbox.
  • In the Colors dialog that appears, select a color folder you previously created in the Assets section, then click Done.

Once the folder is linked, the panel displays the available colors, and you can configure the Label, mark it as Required, change the linked Folder, or adjust how the colors are displayed with Edit display type.

Use this option when you want to limit customers to a curated set of brand-appropriate colors.

Option B: Personalize with color picker

This option gives customers full freedom to pick any color from the color spectrum (as shown in Image 3). To set it up:

  • Tick the Personalize with color picker checkbox.
  • Configure the Label, add optional Help text, and set a Default color that the text uses before the customer makes a change.
  • You can also mark the field as Required.

Use this option when you want to give customers unrestricted color choices rather than a fixed palette.

5. Personalize with stroke palette

The stroke palette works much like the color palette, but instead of changing the text color, it lets customers change the stroke (outline) color of the text.

To set it up:

  • Tick the Personalize with stroke palette checkbox.
  • In the Colors dialog that appears, select a color folder you previously created in the Assets section, then click Done.

Once the folder is linked, you can configure the Label, mark it as Required, change the linked Folder, or adjust how the colors are displayed with Edit display type — just as with the color palette.

Use this option when you want customers to customize the text outline rather than (or in addition to) the fill color.

6. Personalize text background swatch

This option lets customers apply a colored background (swatch) behind the text, choosing from a predefined set of colors. To set it up:

  • Tick the Personalize text background swatch checkbox.
  • In the Colors dialog that appears, select a color folder you previously created in the Assets section, then click Done.

Once the folder is linked, you can configure the following:

  • Label — the field name shown to customers (e.g., "Change Text Pattern")
  • Required — makes the selection mandatory before adding the product to cart
  • Values — displays the background colors pulled from the linked folder; each appears as a selectable swatch
  • Folder — shows which color folder is linked; click to change it
  • Edit display type — adjusts how the swatch options are displayed to customers

Use this option when you want customers to be able to change the background or fill behind their text, rather than just the text color itself.
