General
Creating a template is the first step in setting up a customizable product in Customix. In this section, we’ll walk you through the basics of template creation, including how to set up your print file, manage layers, and create layout variations.
1. Create a New Template

To get started:
- Go to the "Templates" tab in the sidebar.
- Click the + Add button to create a new template.
- A pop-up will appear for you to set up the template name, print file size, and unit.

You have three options to define the print area:
- Manually enter the Width and Height.
- Import from product base: Click Import from "product base" to automatically apply the size of an existing product in your base library.

- Image: Select the Image option and upload an example image. Customix will detect the image dimensions and use them to set the width and height of the print file.

This print file determines the printable canvas area used in your design and output file.
2. Understanding Layers
Once your template is created, you can start adding layers to design your product.
Layers represent each individual element on your design canvas, such as text, images, or cliparts. A layer can be a fixed layer, which stays the same in the final output, or a personalizable layer, which customers can edit or customize themselves.
To rename a layer, double-click the layer name in the sidebar. You can also drag to reposition layers, resize them, and control their stacking order of visibility (top to bottom).

3. Create Layouts
Layouts let you offer multiple design variations within a single template. For example, if you want to provide:
- A layout with 1 dog, and
- A layout with 2 dogs, you can create both under the same template, and let customers switch between them.
To create a layout:
- Click Create layout.
- Design separately in each layout tab.
Each layout can have unique combinations of layers, giving merchants full flexibility over design configurations.

This document covers the basic concepts you'll work with when building templates. Each topic is explained in greater detail in its own dedicated guide.
