To help you get familiar with the setup process, we’ll use a real example from our Customix demo store. This poster product allows customers to upload their own photo, add a custom message, and preview it live, which will be a perfect use case for beginners.

By the end of this guide, you’ll have a live customizable poster just like this, ready for customers to personalize and purchase.

Step 1: Enable App Embed

Before doing anything else, make sure Customix is enabled in your theme:

Open the Customix Product Personalizer app from your Shopify admin panel.
In the Setup Guide, click Enable App Embed.
This opens the Shopify theme editor. Toggle the switch to enable Customix.
Don’t forget to click Save in the top-right corner. ⚠️ If this step is skipped, the customizer won’t appear on your product pages.

This article covers how to enable image-based customization through the Image Folder feature in Customix. This is ideal for clipart-style personalization, such as selecting hairstyle, outfit, or pet images—but it can also be used for any image-based choice (e.g. product color option, badges).

1. Add Image Folders layer

Go to Assets > Images, and upload your images to organized folders.

Each folder should contain a specific category of options (e.g., Hair, Shirt, Eyes).
The app supports both single-level and two-level folder structures:
- Single-level folders: Display options directly (e.g., the “Hair” folder with various hairstyles).
- Two-level folders: Will display as a two-step selection (e.g., “Hair Color” → “Blonde”, “Brown”, each containing multiple styles).

📁 If you select a folder with subfolders, the system will automatically generate a 2-level dropdown interface in the storefront.

After inserting the image folder:

Simply select the layer and look to the right-hand panel.
No need to enable a separate personalization switch.
Set a label (e.g., “Choose Dad’s Skin”).
Check Required if the customer must select an image.

Understanding Templates

Templates are the heart of every customizable product in Customix. They define how your design looks, where personalization happens, and how customers interact with it on your store.

What Is a Template?

A template is a visual layout that connects design elements (like text, images, and artwork) with customer inputs. It serves as the creative and functional foundation for your personalized product. When a customer personalizes an item on your store — uploads a photo, enters names, or selects colors — they’re interacting with the structure you've defined in the template.

What Templates Include

Each template is made up of several key components:

Print Area: Defines the boundaries where content will be printed on the actual product (e.g., the printable zone of a t-shirt or poster).
Personalization Layers: These include text fields, image upload areas,clipart selectors, and more. Templates use layers (similar to graphic design tools) to control how elements are stacked and arranged.
Live Preview: Here you link your design to a product mockup so customers can see their personalization in real-time.
Option Sets: The option sets tab lets you group and manage all the personalization options shown to the customer.

Pricing FAQs

1. How does the pricing work?

Customix offers two pricing plans:

Free Plan: $0/month — includes 10 free orders per month.
Growth Plan: $12.95/month — includes 100 free orders per month. After that, it’s $0.30 per additional line item, capped at a maximum of $1,000 in charges per billing cycle.

2. What is counted as an order?

Each order sent to a fulfillment service is counted as one order, regardless of the number of items in it. If a customer orders multiple products in one checkout, each individual product (line item) is counted toward the usage.

3. What happens when I exceed my order limit?

On the Free plan, orders beyond the 10 free orders will not be sent for fulfillment. On the Growth plan, any orders beyond the 100 free orders will incur a charge of $0.30 per line item. Billing is capped at a maximum of $1,000 per billing cycle.

4. What does “$0.30 per line item” mean?

A line item refers to a single product in an order. For example, if one customer orders 2 different t-shirts, that’s counted as 2 line items.

5. When does the billing cycle start?

The billing cycle starts the moment you subscribe to the Growth Plan and renews every 30 days. Usage (i.e., free and paid orders) resets at the beginning of each new cycle.

6. Is there a free trial?

Yes! The Growth Plan comes with a 14-day free trial. During this time, you can use all features and submit up to 100 free orders without being charged.

What Are Option Sets?

Option Sets are a powerful way to organize and control personalization layers within your design. Instead of having all customization options shown at once, Option Sets allow you to:

Reorder how options appear
Change the thumbnail view for better customer experience
Set up conditional logic (show/hide options based on customer input)
Add extra charges for specific options (e.g. premium upgrades)
Group related customization options for cleaner presentation

Conditional logic allows you to show or hide options based on the user’s previous selections. For example:

If the customer selects “Dad and Daughter” as the layout → only girl character options are shown

Image assets are essential for creating visually engaging personalized products. In Customix, you can upload clipart, decorative graphics, and default artwork that appear in your design templates, either as part of the base design or as selectable options for customers.

Click Upload ZIP File to upload an entire folder at once.

Click Add Folders to create folders for specific themes (e.g. “Dog Breeds,” “Mother’s Day Clipart,” etc.)
After upload, drag or move images into a category for better organization. These categories will appear in the template editor when image assets.
